On August 15, 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, declaring India's independence. The tricolour flag, designed by Pingali Venkayya, consists of saffron, white, and green stripes with a navy blue Ashoka Chakra (wheel) in the center.
